To display the client’s impressive art collection, an existing, closed off Paddington house, was completely reworked to create an open plan, light filled house.

Balancing the lighting needs of the art collection, with the client’s living requirements, lighting was a significant driver of the design. Working with a specialist consultant, the striking lighting design provides the perfect conditions for displaying the art, while also enhancing the architecture of the spaces.

A series of sculptural skylights and internal voids draw natural light deep into the heart of the house, while protecting the artworks from direct sunlight. The skylight forms and filigrees filter the natural sunlight, creating playful patterns of light and shadow with the sun movements throughout the day. A further filigree to the street elevation provides filtered views through to the impressive street trees beyond, while offering a sense of privacy from the street.

A simple palette of white and timber, both internally and externally, work harmoniously to create a calmness that encouragers the art to take centre stage,, while ensuring a homely feel to this art filled house.
