Nestled in Woollahra, this house is set on a long, narrow site characteristic of the Conservation Area. Being an end-of-row property, and perched atop a dramatic, north-facing cliff however, this is a special and rare site. This elevated position affords complete privacy, generous views over the lush canopy of Cooper Park, and a rare sense of breathing space.

The design fully embraces the site’s width, with 3 carefully placed courtyards, creating the experience of a freestanding home. These courtyards, along with strategically places voids and skylights, invite natural light and cooling breezes deep into the interiors from three sides and above, sculpting the house into a refined, three-dimensional form.

Materiality is restrained yet rich, with a palette of off-form concrete, locally sourced brick, warm Australian timbers, and native planted courtyards and roof gardens. Every element has been selected with an emphasis on sustainability, with materials locally sourced wherever possible—Bowral bricks from the Southern Highlands, responsibly grown Australian timbers, and locally produced concrete. Where feasible, windows, appliances, lighting, and fittings are all Australian or New Zealand-made, reinforcing a commitment to both craftsmanship and environmental responsibility. Works by local artists are thoughtfully integrated, adding depth and a personal narrative to the spaces.

Beyond material selection, the home operates without gas, utilising a substantial solar array and maximizing water efficiency through rainwater harvesting for reuse within both the house and garden. Designed to be as environmentally responsible as it is elegantly understated, this residence is a seamless fusion of sustainability, refinement, and site-specific sensitivity.
